Former Chicago Police Officer Shoots Woman, Kills Self in Heated Child Custody Dispute

DivorcePaper

News of the death of a Chicago grandmother, who was also a former Chicago Cook County Police Officer, and the horrific crime that she carried out prior to her death in a heated child custody battle took headlines by storm at the end of July and sent shockwaves through communities in both Chicago and New York. According to local news reports, 65-year-old Kathleen Leigh of Chicago, a former Cook County probation officer, was out on an otherwise-normal morning in New York City’s Upper East Side of Manhattan on Friday, July 26 when she decided to do the unthinkable. Retired officer Leigh went up to 45-year-old Marissa Galloway, the mother of Leigh’s grandchild, as Galloway had just put the child in the car and was loading the stroller into the vehicle, and shot her in the head with a 9mm Glock handgun. Leigh is reported to have shot Galloway again in the back as Galloway lay in the street from her injuries. Leigh then shot herself in the head with the same gun, in a murder-suicide. Leigh died at the scene of the incident from her injuries, and Galloway was rushed to the hospital, but, unfortunately, also succumbed to her injuries and passed away.

The reason for the horrific murder-suicide is said to have been a bitter child custody dispute between Leigh’s son and Galloway. There had been at least 5 other domestic disputes reported to police regarding the child custody matter between the arguing couple. Leigh was found not only with the gun that she killed Galloway and herself with, but also with another gun. Galloway was a beloved teacher and track coach at Fordham University. The university said of her horrific murder that the university community is “deeply saddened by the tragic death…We keep Marissa and her loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.”
