Chicago Woman Recounts Domestic Violence Firsthand, What Can Domestic Violence Victims in Chicago Do to Be Safer?
Hearing the term “domestic violence” sends a chill down many people’s spines. The idea that a loved one, a trusted companion, and a romantic partner could physically abuse a person, beat them, torture them, and in some cases, sexually assault them, is almost unfathomable to some Chicago residents. However, the truth of the matter is that domestic violence can and does happen in Chicago and the resolution for domestic violence victims is not always clear-cut. One domestic violence survivor in Chicago shared her story with CBS News. Her story serves to show individuals in Chicago just how domestic violence can escalate from a seemingly peaceful and loving relationship to explosive harm and violence.
Precious Wright told CBS News her firsthand story of surviving domestic violence at the hands of her boyfriend. She explained, “I was with this individual for about three years…He was literally a girl’s dream—anything you would want in a man. Financially responsible, nice dates, traveling out of town.” However, the honeymoon period ended after around one and a half years into the relationship, when Wright’s boyfriend became more extreme. Wright recounted that her boyfriend’s loving demeanor turned into “extreme, extreme manipulation”, and he began to get out of control when the couple had arguments. Wright went on to describe that fights turned into threats, and threats turned into stalking and harassment, stating that, “He also made between 50 and 75 email addresses to email me from…He would call me from 100, 200 different numbers, and I would block him.” After contacting police “dozens” of times, including about her abuser breaking her car window several times and demanding that he be let into her home, he attacked her by punching her and throwing her to the ground. Finally, Wright was able to obtain a two-year-long Order of Protection, writing “I kept trying to fix the situation on my own. My abuser is stalking me at my home. He’s waiting to catch me alone to physically assault me.”
