Child custody and child support cases can truly be some of the most controversial, heated, and emotionally charged cases in civil law. With important and potentially life-altering issues, such as who will make life decisions on behalf of the child, and who the child will live with and be taken care of by, are certainly determinations that most Chicago parents go to bat about. In addition, the issue of who will make child support payments to the other parent for the benefit of the children is also something that must typically be decided in a Chicago child support case. One Chicago parent’s frustrations that led him to act out in a verbally threatening manner underscores just how intense and hard-fought these types of legal issues can be.

According to local news reports reporting on the matter, last year, on September 27, a 58-year-old Chicago man and father became so upset about the child support obligations that he was facing that he got into a verbal altercation with a Chicago public worker and has now been charged with a Class 3 felony under Illinois criminal laws. The scary and emotionally-heated incident occurred when the man called into the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services and spoke with a public caseworker about his case. According to reports, the man and father told the caseworker that he “would wait for the caseworker to come out of work, follow him home and kill his mother f—king a—.” The man and father then left a message with the caseworker “warning” the caseworker not to get the police involved after the caseworker reported the threat to the North Chicago Police Department. The man was arrested after he failed to show up to a meeting to discuss the situation, and told officers that they should “go ahead and issue a warrant and that the police better be ready to kill him.” The man has three separate child support cases filed in the county, and arrearage orders were filed in all of those cases. The man has appealed the orders in all three cases.
