Can You Believe this Startling Statistic about American Couples and “Sleep Divorce”? Read On Here

It is time to face the facts: the term “sleep divorce”, which was probably unknown to most Chicagoans prior to the last several years, has become a viral phenomenon in Chicago households and throughout the country. If you haven’t caught the “buzz” about sleep divorce yet, it may be coming to a household near you, or perhaps to one of your friend’s or family member’s homes. Indeed, sleep divorce seems here to stay, and new information from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine points to just how many Americans are practicing the trend in their own homes.

“Sleep Divorce”: What is It and Why is It so Popular?

To get started, the term “sleep divorce” simply refers to a couple sleeping separately, that is, in separate beds or some other sleeping arrangement, due to the fact that each partner has different (and likely incompatible) sleeping patterns or preferences. Seema Khosla, of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, said to Newsweek online about the term, “The term might sound alarming, but it’s not about ending a relationship…It’s about prioritizing sleep health and addressing the sleep issues that may be eroding a relationship, such as snoring, tossing and turning, or differing sleep schedules. A sleep divorce is not a sign of a relationship in trouble—it allows for honest conversation about disruptive habits and allows each person to enjoy uninterrupted, restorative sleep.” Khosla continued, regarding the benefits of a sleep divorce when there are different sleep patterns or preferences within a couple, “We know that getting a good night’s sleep is important for both health and happiness…So, if you’re continually sacrificing sleep quality and quantity—due to your partner’s persistent snoring, for example—then it may be time to discuss your sleeping arrangements.”

The Statistics on Sleep Divorce

So, then, just how popular is the sleep divorce trend when it comes to American couples and households? According to Newsweek, and based on an American Academy of Sleep Medicine Study, a whopping 29% of Americans, or roughly one-third, have decided to implement the sleep strategy in their homes. However, whether the popular new sleep trend will keep couples together or signal the end of the relationship remains to be seen, and will, of course, ultimately, depend on the couple.
