$1 Million Per Month Child Support Demand Highlights Complexities in Chicago High-Net-Worth Divorce Cases

A high-net-worth divorce case that was filed in Illinois last year highlights the complexities, and the high stakes, of Chicago high-net-worth divorces. According to local news reports, Multibillionaire hedge fund owner Ken Griffin filed for divorce from his wife, Anne, in Illinois court after the couple had been together for a total of 11 years of marriage. Reports indicate that the couple only cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their divorce, as is required under Illinois’ no-fault marriage and divorce laws. The couple has three young children that were born of the marriage, ages 2, 4, and 7 years old. The divorce case would look like the typical divorce with children, however, what stands out in the case is the amount of child support that Anne Griffin has asked for – a cool and whopping $1 million per month.
In support of the $1 million per month child support award, Anne Griffin cited that her children currently have a number of monthly expenses related to the lifestyle that they live. Those costs include, “$14,000 for food, $300,000 for a private jet, $160,000 for vacations and $2,000 for stationery.” Under Illinois marriage and divorce laws, “children of divorce are entitled to continue the lifestyle they enjoyed during the marriage.” Assets in the high-net-worth divorce include five homes, two private airplanes, and household staff and security services for the children. Ken Griffin is said to currently pay for everything related to the expenses of the children, and advocates in his corner argue that his estranged wife simply “wants him to ‘continue funding her lifestyle.’” Anne Griffin has also asked an Illinois judge to “throw out” the prenuptial agreement in the case, under which she would only be entitled to 1 percent of her estranged husband’s estate, equivalent to $50 million at this time. It remains to be seen what will happen in the divorce case that is said to be gearing up to be “one of the biggest divorce settlements in America.”
